Dr. Najam Hassan, Ph.D., PMP, CISA, is a scholar-practitioner with nearly 35 years of experience in the information technology field and over 15 years of higher education teaching experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Analytics and Decision Sciences from Capitol Technology University, a Master of Science in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, and dual master’s degrees (MBA and MIM) from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Dr. Hassan is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and a Six Sigma Green Belt.
Most recently, Dr. Hassan served as the Department Chair for Computer and Data Science at Capitol Technology University, where he led the creation of Maryland’s first MHEC-approved Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence. He was the Founder and Director of the AI Center of Excellence (AICE) and served as a Principal Investigator for the NIST AI Consortium (AIC). His commitment to public service and technical policy is further evidenced by his membership on the Maryland Responsible AI Council (MRAC) where he is the co-chair of the Business, Commerce and Financial Services Commitee. He is a member of the Maryland Blockchain Association. He currently serves as the Associate Professor, Computer Science, Development and Administration at the University of Maryland Global Campus. He is an NSF NAIRR AI Education fellow for the inaugural cohort of 2026-27 to prepare the students in higher education for the AI-drven future. He is on the Fulbright Specialist Panel and is an ABET Program Evaluator for Data Science. Dr. Hassan brings an extensive industry background from technical leadership roles at Verizon, GEICO, IBM, and NTT Data. He was also a Global Learning Fellow at UMBC, where he focused on instructional innovation and digital transformation to prepare a modern workforce for high-demand technical fields.
